Many bioacoustic studies generated an enormous amount of data, which made this manual review process at best inefficient, and at worst impossible to accomplish.įor decades, scientists have worked to automate the process of detecting and classifying sounds into categories or types. Output from a long-duration sound had to be spliced together (see Chap. Before the advent of digital signal-analysis, data were analyzed while enduring the acrid smell of etched Kay Sona-Graph paper and piles of 8-s printouts removed from a spinning recording drum littering laboratory tables and floors. In the past, detection and classification tasks were performed by an experienced bioacoustician who listened to the sounds and visually reviewed spectrographic displays (e.g., for birds by Baptista and Gaunt 1997 chipmunks by Gannon and Lawlor 1989 baleen whales by Stafford et al. Some mammal species produce distinctive, stereotyped sounds (e.g., chipmunks, dogs, and blue whales), while others produce signals with high variability (e.g., mimicking birds, primates, and dolphins).īecause animals produce so many different types of sounds, developing algorithms to detect, recognize, and classify a wide range of acoustic signals can be challenging. Song birds and some species of baleen whales arrange individual sounds into patterns called song and repeat these patterns for hours or days. For example, the repertoire of marine mammal acoustic signals includes broadband echolocation clicks as short as 10 μs in duration and with energy up to 200 kHz, as well as narrowband tonal sounds as low as 10–20 Hz, lasting more than10 s. Animals produce many different types of sounds that span orders of magnitude along the dimensions of time, frequency, and amplitude. Classification provides a convenient method for comparing features, making systematic measurements, testing hypotheses, and performing statistical analyses.īioacousticians have categorized sounds produced by animals for decades, and new methods for classification continue to be developed (Horn and Falls 1996 Beeman 1998). Categorization also can make recognition of patterns easier and assist in understanding the ways in which biological systems work. For example, organisms can be classified based on biome, ecosystem, taxon, phylogeny, niche, demographic class, behavior type, etc., and this allows complex systems to be organized. Researchers have a natural tendency to classify biological systems into categories. Methods for evaluating the performance of automated tools are presented (i.e., receiver operating characteristics and precision-recall) and challenges with classifying animal sounds are discussed. In this chapter, we present software algorithms for automated signal detection (based on energy, Teager–Kaiser energy, spectral entropy, matched filtering, and spectrogram cross-correlation) as well as for signal classification (e.g., parametric clustering, principal component analysis, discriminant function analysis, classification trees, artificial neural networks, random forests, Gaussian mixture models, support vector machines, dynamic time-warping, and hidden Markov models). Advances in computer technology and the development of software for the automatic detection and classification of sounds have allowed bioacousticians to quickly find sounds in recordings, thus significantly reducing analysis time and enabling the analysis of larger datasets. Initially, researchers applied qualitative methods, such as listening and visually discerning sounds in spectrograms. Techniques for classification have evolved over time as technical capabilities have expanded. Classification of acoustic repertoires enables the identification of species, age, gender, and individual identity, correlations between sound types and behavior, the identification of changes in vocal behavior over time or in response to anthropogenic noise, comparisons between the repertoires of populations living in different geographic regions and environments, and the development of software tools for automated signal processing. Classification of the acoustic repertoires of animals into sound types is a useful tool for taxonomic studies, behavioral studies, and for documenting the occurrence of animals. 12/8/2023 0 Comments Usher meaning englishThe show brilliantly cuts through these themes, asking us to look at our own desires that lead us astray, who has influenced us and why they have power over us, and what the true meaning of karma is, all from an abolitionist perspective. Instead, their hands are forced by powerful systems and people who know the positions they’ve put them in and how they can maintain control. The complicated layering and context here is, of course, that people who come from poverty and trauma don’t make so-called bad decisions or harmful decisions because they’re morally lacking. But he’s fearful that Gris would completely destroy his reputation. While in the moment Roderick pretends he’s all in for protecting the company to rise in the ranks, we later see him come home to panic about how he can possibly participate in such evil work. “You play your cards right and one day all this could be yours, Charlie Bucket,” he says to Roderick, making a Willy Wonka reference. Roderick’s choice here is the pivotal moment, we come to find out, because it’s the moment when he decides between truth and ego, or greed. Gris gives a speech about material possessions that counters Dupin’s Roderick has the angel and the devil on his shoulders. In his office, Gris turns the table on young Roderick and accuses him of not being a team player for simply wanting to tell the truth, once again the truth is made into an enemy and not a virtue from the perspective of a wealthy character. Meanwhile, his brother Leo, a messy bisexual who we first meet cheating on his husband Julius (who goes by Jules, played by Daniel Chae Jun) with a woman obsessed with his fame and fortune, believes himself superhuman, and that’s where he finds his downfall.įollowing his speech in the flashback, we see Roderick go back to Rufus Griswold (Gris, played by Michael Trucco), the head of Fortunato, to confront him about his crimes. It’s a fitting framing of the ways that our own hubris often brings others down with us, and not us alone. His greed, like that of his family, ultimately gets the best of him when he’s the first member to be taken out by his own folly - pulling a sprinkler system to rain down what he thought was water on the party but ends up being deadly chemicals, killing not only himself but everyone else in attendance. He’s selfishly thrown the party out of hedonism and lust, but mainly so that he can get secret footage to blackmail people, and out of spite and rebellion against his father and family. Prospero (aptly named for the Latin word meaning fortune or abundance and borrowed from Shakespeare’s The Tempest), for example, who is a queer man in a polyamorous triad, meets his untimely demise because of the massive orgy he throws. In that regard, Flanagan’s retelling of Usher accomplishes the presentation of queer mess strikingly so. Others have voiced that queer and trans characters on screen and in stories, much like queer and trans people in real life, deserve to get to be messy without it being an indictment of or definition of their queerness. Some queer and trans people demand wholesomeness, hurt by decades worth of transgender people as punchline in movie after movie, for example. This has included constant discourse online in spaces like Twitter and on TikTok picking apart how much sex is “too much” in media, and whether showing people causing harm is inherently encouraging and validating of people’s harmful behavior offscreen. There’s been much conversation around this trend cross-generationally within queer spaces. But that creates a harmful supposition that we don’t deserve those things if we make mistakes or have been “bad” in any way - and that position is inherently flawed, and messy itself. Some queer media attempts to argue that queer and trans people are good and pure and only victim, that’s why we deserve full lives and human rights. And that value judgment can’t be untangled from their queerness or transness. But much of the queer media from the last decade revolves around or orbits characters who are meant to be sweet, perfect angels who deserve the world specifically only because they aren’t messy. Pieces of media that have most recently grappled with and attempted to deconstruct that include Joel Kim Booster’s 2022 smash success Fire Island, alongside new champions like the recent queer teenage rom com slash fight movie Bottoms, or Rivkah Reyes’ messy queer short film Gianna. In the last few decades, queer media - even stories created by queer and trans people ourselves - has fallen victim to being washed over with wholesomeness. 12/8/2023 0 Comments Best incubatorIts accelerator program has produced over 1,000+ companies valued at over $8 Billion. If you have an early-stage startup, you can take advantage of Y Combinator’s biannual 3-month program, throughout this time you will relocate to Silicon Valley to collaborate closely with their team. The financing is made through a typical contract known as the SAFE and essentially represents an injection of capital. The company then selects between 200 and 240 projects to work with per year, adopting a very draconian selection process. Y Combinator is run by a team of 40 people and acquires around 13,000 startup applications via the internet alone every year. It is located in Palo Alto, Silicon Valley. Founded by Paul Graham in 2005, Y Combinator has funded 2,000+ startups estimating an overall total of more than $100 billion. Every year the accelerator funds a group of new startups with $120,000. Y Combinator is a trailblazer in the startup accelerator space. It is practically one of the oldest startup incubators having accelerated the success of Dropbox, Airbnb, Instacart, Stripe, Twitch, Coinbase, Weebly and Reddit. Y Combinator is considered to be the supreme startup accelerator around the globe. Here are some of the most reputed startup incubators worldwide: Thanks to the freelance revolution, startups also now have better access to freelance scientists and consultants who can help them overcome business and research challenges. They provide access to a working space, investment, mentorship, and more. Startup incubators and accelerators form a great launchpad for entrepreneurs who want to establish robust, scalable businesses. Some of the world’s most successful startups have had the backing of startup incubators. And I was kind of disheartened to read that it's "working to optimize the performance of higher powered processing systems and higher resolution monitors." That's probably why the 16-core system with an 8K monitor I tried it on didn't feel as fast as I expected and why using it on a 4K monitor still results in unusably small menu text. But I want to start viewing the full-res images while it's still importing, so I need a real speedup. So Adobe split the file ingestion aspect of importing from the preview generation to make it seem faster the thumbnails come in zippily, and you can see the preview generation slogging behind. For instance, importing has always been notably slow. At the very least, CC will suck up development resources that might otherwise have gone to Classic.Īdobe has sort of addressed the biggest performance pains. Lightroom CC is The Future, and labeling this one "Classic" feels like the beginning of the end. But it feels like Adobe doesn't really plan to fix the architectural problems with it, such as only being able to sync a single catalog. And it does sync files with the other versions. Get the Lightroom plan with 1TB of storage, or purchase a Creative Cloud Photography plan that includes Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, and Photoshop (20GB or 1TB). (The Creative Cloud app still doesn't let you selectively sync directories or files after several years, so every time I install on a new system, which I do a lot, it starts syncing the 22,000 files I have in that CC account.) Adobe's ready to serve up more storage in exchange for your money, though. You can purchase Lightroom with an annual plan starting at US9.99/mo or US119.88/yr. You have no granular control over what lives locally or selectively sync, which means some people are going to hit that 1TB limit fast. At this year's Adobe Max conference, along with feature and performance updates to the usual suspects, the company rolled out its revamped photography subscription plans - including the final buh-bye to the you-can-use-it-without-paying-annually version of Lightroom. 12/7/2023 0 Comments Topping for dutch apple pieWhy You Will Love this Dutch Apple Pie Recipe Looking for a cinnamon roll that’s made a little healthier? This Dutch Apple Pie recipe is the perfect way to indulge your sweet tooth and celebrate the fall season. Carlton Martial, the NCAA’s all-time tackles leader, and defensive coordinator Shiel Wood are both gone but the unit’s top three pass rushers and all-league corner Reddy Steward return. The Trojans rode an incredible defense through a 12-win season that included a 6-1 record in one-score games. He made an immediate impact and guided the Trojans to a Sun Belt championship, their first since 2009. Troy, South Alabama set to square off for Sun Belt West titleĪfter three losing seasons under Chip Lindsey, Troy made a change and hired Jon Sumrall. Elsewhere, Georgia State appears to be trending in the wrong direction after three straight bowl trips from 2019 to 2021, while Old Dominion could be in for another long year. The WR corps took some losses, but the Thundering Herd should be able to run the ball behind an experienced line.Ī potential surprise contender in the East is Georgia Southern, which transitioned from a run-dominant offense to Clay Helton’s pass-happy scheme and surprisingly got to a bowl game. On offense, Cam Fancher emerged at QB late in the season and electric RB Rasheen Ali is back from injury. The defense was excellent and should be among the SBC’s best even though coordinator Lance Guidry left for Miami. Marshall, meanwhile, had its own up-and-down season that included a win over Notre Dame and loss to Bowling Green. This team will get back to a bowl, but can it get back to the top of the league? App returns RB Nate Noel, its top four receivers and has a strong offensive line, but has to replace QB Chase Brice and some major contributors on defense. It was a wild season that included a 63-61 loss to North Carolina, a road win over Texas A&M and a win over Troy on a Hail Mary. (Photo by Chris Bernacchi/Diamond Images via Getty Images)Īpp State is coming off its worst season as an FBS member - 6-6 with two wins over FCS teams. With JMU ineligible, Appalachian State and Marshall look like Coastal’s main competition for the East.Īfter a foray into the transfer portal, Grayson McCall is back at Coastal Carolina for another season under new coach Tim Beck. The majority of last year’s offensive line is back and the defense looks strong even after DE Isaac Ukwu’s late transfer to Ole Miss. Jordan McCloud and Alonza Barnett are competing for the starting QB job, while the Dukes added a slew of transfers at the skill positions. JMU is still one of the better teams in the Sun Belt, though maybe not as good as last year with QB Todd Centeio gone. JMU went 8-3 in its first year as an FBS member but remains ineligible to compete for the conference title due to NCAA rules. Unfortunately, James Madison is not one of them. When you couple that with a mediocre defense that lost DE Josaiah Stewart to Michigan and DT Jerrod Clark to the NFL, it could open the door for other contenders in the Sun Belt East. Beyond just McCall, Beck inherits a loaded offense but brings a more generic system compared to the unique attack employed by Chadwell. Star quarterback Grayson McCall is back, but it’s fair to wonder if Chanticleers could be in for a bit of a rebuilding year.Ĭoach Jamey Chadwell departed for Liberty and the school hired longtime assistant Tim Beck as his replacement. Previously: AAC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 Sun Belt East is loaded and Coastal Carolina is vulnerableĬoastal Carolina went a combined 22-3 in 20 but took a step back last year, finishing 9-4. The Sun Belt is going to be extremely competitive this season. Troy and South Alabama are considered a step above the rest of the West, but the East is loaded with five different schools receiving first-place votes to win the division in the annual preseason poll. Troy is the current betting favorite, but West Division foe South Alabama is right on Troy’s tail. 12/7/2023 0 Comments Moving pool tables near meSaskatoon Pool Table Movers is backed by the only national organization in our industry. 12/7/2023 0 Comments Quality minimalist jewelryToday, people prefer to buy sterling silver for their minimalistic jewelry as it is affordable yet durable. The only rule to minimalism jewelry is that “ restraint must be shown.” However, the reason why it is such a trend is that everyone looks good in it, regardless of age, sin color or whatever. People are often buying jewelry impulsively. Jewelry is one of the first areas people often look at cutting back. The whole point is to find multi-purpose high-quality items and cut out the ones you don’t need! Showing Restraint with Minimalistic Jewelry This inspired Americans to cut down on their excess stuff and to invest in substance over style. As a result, brands have placed a growing focus on offering ethically sourced and cruelty-free products. In fact, over 78% of millennials would rather spend on experiences and quality, as they favor spending more on ethical products. However, the vast majority of millennials are still willing to spend a little extra on their leisure. They are also unique as they grew up during a recession and paid record-high student debt. Millennials make up more than 25% of the American population, which makes them the largest working population. Minimalism was especially embraced by Millennials. The trend took the United States by storm, as trendsetters and entrepreneurs started to focus on minimalism. In 2014, Marie Kondo released the book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” It encouraged people to declutter and to cut back. This shows that Americans had become obsessed with the style since trends have been coming and going so quickly. However, over 80% of the clothes are either new or barely worn. Today, the number jumped to 136 items of clothing. Studies had shown that in the 1930’s, an average American woman owned 36 items of clothing. But, how did the trend start? Why are people adopting minimalism into jewelry? Americans, The MaterialisticĪmerica had grown increasingly materialistic over the years. Minimalism is the trend of the decade as many are trying to scale down their looks for a more effortless, clean feel. 12/7/2023 0 Comments Yellow orange tabby catBlue-Silver and White – as for Blue-Silver but with white on the bib, tummy and all four paws. The tabby markings are a deep blue (gray).
